Everything in my aquaponics system has been going fine over the last few weeks. I've been finally getting around to building a proper lid for the fish tank, as upto now I've been using a galvanized steel grid covered by a tarp.
So back in November 2011, after reading the online aquaponics forums for several months (the BYAP and the Practical Aquaponics Forum are excellent) I decided that it was about time I built my own aquaponics system. The simplest way of getting started seemed to be to use an IBC; that way I could get a tank and growbed in one go.
Woke up this morning to no electricity. Rushed out in a panic to see if my new fingerlings were OK. They were, but I spent the next hour manually pouring water from a bucket into the tank to airate it. Luckily the power came back on around 8am. It had been off for 4-5 hours, with no losses. The plants seem fine too.
But I can see that if this had happened in the heat of the day, that the consequences could have been much worse.
I'm going to have to work out some sort of backup system. It'll stop me worrying.
After a couple of months of building and cycling my first aquaponics system, today I finally took delivery of 30 silver perch fingerlings (bought from Aqua Blue, who were very helpful and quick to deliver)
The fish arrived safely in a polystyrene box. They put the fingerlings into a double sealed plastic bag. The bag is filled with pure oxygen, which enables them to survive during transport for up to 48 hours.
